Sarah Swift Building

This project is now complete. Below you can find an archive of information including progress photos and project details.

The University invested £19m to create the Sarah Swift Building – the new home for our Schools of Health & Social Care and Psychology.

The new building is named after Dame Sarah Swift GBE RRC, nurse and founder of the College of Nursing (now the Royal College of Nursing), born in Kirton Skeldyke in south Lincolnshire.

A two-minute animation of the finished building is below.

Project overview

Health & Social Care and Psychology are two of the largest Schools in the University, and the number of Nursing students at the University has grown rapidly since 2012.

The facility houses specialist teaching and research spaces for both Schools, as well as general teaching and learning facilities for use by the wider University.

Health & Social Care

The building brings the whole School of Health & Social Care together in one location for the first time, replacing its existing facilities in the Think Tank and Bridge House. It includes advanced clinical simulation facilities for the School’s Nursing programmes, as well as tutorial, social learning and office space for the School’s students and staff.

Psychology

The building also collocates the whole School of Psychology for the first time, replacing the School’s existing  facilities in the Minerva Building and Bridge House.

Interdisciplinary links

The collocation of Health & Social Care and Psychology in the new building will facilitate the development of interdisciplinary interactions between students and staff in both Schools. The building will also provide purpose-built space for the College of Social Science’s growing Centre for Professional Development and its interdisciplinary teaching and research activities.

Location

The Sarah Swift Building is located on Brayford Wharf East, to the north of the David Chiddick Building:

The project will also allow for the improvement of public space between the Sarah Swift Building and the David Chiddick Building (the green space highlighted on the plan).
