Lincoln Medical School

The Lincoln Medical School is now open and this project is now complete.

For some time, it has been the University’s goal to develop a medical school for Lincolnshire and on 20th March 2018, the Higher Education Funding Council England (HEFCE) and Health Education England (HEE) confirmed that the University of Lincoln’s collaborative bid with the University of Nottingham to establish a new medical school was successful.

Eighty places have been allocated to create the new school at the University of Lincoln as part of a major expansion of 25% additional medical students for the UK. Lincolnshire is one of only five regions chosen to have a new school and it follows a rigorous bidding process.

This new medical school welcomed its first cohort of undergraduate medicine students to Lincoln in September 2019. The medical school will make a significant difference to the Lincolnshire region, which will benefit from the establishment of this hub of medical expertise: clinical placements will take place at hospitals, GP surgeries and other healthcare units across the county in collaboration with United Lincolnshire Hospitals NHS Trust and the Lincolnshire Partnership NHS Foundation Trust.

As part of this, we are currently developing a purpose-built facility to house the Lincoln Medical School which is due to open in 2021. The facility will include a range of laboratories such as clinical skills suite, anatomy suite and a category 2 science laboratory. The building will also provide a dedicated Bio-Medical & Health Sciences Library and high-quality social learning spaces to create a real sense of place for the Medical students. Groundworks on site are well underway with the installation of piling complete and the precast bases of the lifts now installed. Steelwork is due to commence this month alongside further groundworks to install the drainage connections for the building. Just before Christmas, BAM Construction utilised a drone to capture the progress on site which can be viewed below and shows the extent of the building footprint at this stage.

Piling works to commence

Following a period of enabling works, BAM Construction will now be commencing main works for the Medical School Building this week. From Tuesday 5th November, piling works will commence for a period of four weeks. To minimise noise and vibration, BAM will be using continuous flight auger piles, which are screwed into the ground rather than driven. Piling will take place in normal working hours.

Medical School Enabling Works

From Monday 19th August until Friday 13th September, enabling works will begin for the Lincoln Medical School. These works include installation of perimeter hoarding and excavation of existing mounds and will allow for a clear and level site ahead of the main construction which is due to commence in October 2019.

During this period of works, there will be an increase in vehicle movement around the boulevard car park to the Medical School construction site. Whilst the main excavation works are taking place, between Tuesday 27th August until Friday 13th September, there will be a significant increase in vehicular traffic to allow for the excavated materials to be removed from the site. It is anticipated that this will be between 70 – 80 wagons a day. A road sweeper will be employed to ensure that the car park is kept as clear as possible during this time.

Following Friday 13th September, continuing minor works will be self-contained within the newly formed site ahead of the start of main construction works.

BAM Construction to Deliver Next Stage of Lincoln Medical School

The University of Lincoln has appointed BAM Construction to deliver the next stage of the Lincoln Medical School.

After the completion of the first stage of a competitive two-stage tendering process through the YorBuild framework, BAM was selected to develop the detailed design and finalise costs for the major new academic facility on the University’s Brayford Pool Campus; the first of its kind in Lincolnshire.

Working in collaboration with the University and Perfect Circle JV, BAM will create the most sustainable building at the University featuring a living wall and solar wall which celebrate the sustainable aspirations of the scheme.

Green Light for Lincoln Medical School Building

The University of Lincoln, UK, has been given the official go-ahead to build Lincolnshire’s first ever medical teaching facility.

It is set to be the most sustainable building on the Brayford campus and the first in Lincoln to include a green wall and a solar wall.

Approval for the plans were unanimously agreed at a meeting of the City of Lincoln council’s planning committee last night (Wednesday 27 March 2019).

It comes after the University of Lincoln and University of Nottingham were successful in a joint bid to establish a new medical school for Lincolnshire.
